Doilies.

Lace placemats.

And chunky knit sweaters with pops of floral embroidery.

Is cottagecore simply just grandma chic somehow made sexy?

It’s no surprise that big knit grandma sweaters emerged onto the runways this year during New York Fashion Week.

After months and months of staying indoors, people are not quite ready to sacrifice their comfort when re-entering the world.

That and if you’ve been baking (and eating) banana bread like me.

Chunky knits camouflage a chunky me.

No? Just me? Moving on.

Heavy knit sweaters with delicate detailing offer the vintage aesthetic consumers have been craving recently. We’ve seen everything from applique, floral embroidery, hand beading grace these gorgeous weighted knits.

A show that struck moments of ecstasy into our soft, cottagecore hearts was none other than Gabriela Hearst’s stunning F/W 2021 Collection.

The collection was centered around juxtapositions of light and dark.

The compositions of silks, leathers, knits, and lace were a focal point for every look, we were blown away by the applique of flowers and color thrown into the balance.

Peek-a-boo can be a fun game.

Especially with your clothes.

What is the perfect way to show a little skin in the Fall and Winter?

The answer is cutouts.

Jonathan Simkhai in his Fall 2021 collection perfectly balances the dichotomy of soft and structured with his subtle cutouts and lingerie details.

The open work of knits and crochet are complemented by the open cuts and structured lines of suit pants and asymmetrical necklines.

Playing with a touch of skin can elevate warm knits to effortlessly chic.

After all, who needs to try so hard when attempting to stay warm?

An although we’ve covered all Fall runway.

The desire for spring has never been so strong this year.

Instead of fall tones, designers have been shifting to a myriad of colors and 3D floral embroidery and prints.

Oscar de La Renta’s recent collection embodies elegance and playful spring even in the year’s coldest months.

The transition from monochromatic tones every fall prior to the vibrant, lively scenes nowadays speaks volumes to how the world is ready to embrace the future.

That’s the point, isn’t it?

Our aesthetic showcases what we aspire to be.

Dear Bridgerton,

You make us want to live in all the bright, feathered glories of the past.

Minus the need for husband or die as an insubordinate, of course.

All the classic techniques of novelty stitching, detailed beading, brocades, broderie, and floral applique.

Whether it be living as a duke and duchess of Hastings or penniless Featherthington, each look had all of Netflix viewers captivated.

All of us are terribly excited to be living vicariously through their lavish parties and dramatic love lives.

(Side note; where is my emotionally unavailable Duke of Hastings?)

And we suspect a few designers were part of that audience.

Markarian incorporated many of these classic techniques into their Fall 2021 ready-to-wear collection and what can we say?

We’re officially courting (i.e. 19th century word for dating) these decadent ensembles, much in the way Lady Whistledown loves her gossip.

From iridescent florals, to flattering square-necks, to dainty lace appliques, each piece makes the wearer feel like a queen of high society.

This 19th century English aesthetic has taken the runway by storm, while the rest of us our swooning with delight.

Or it could be the corsets?

Lack of oxygen and too much banana bread will do that.
