Genderless Fashion is Here to Stay

As consumers are growing more and more diverse, genderless fashion is on an undeniable incline.

With pride month finally here, it is important we acknowledge the future of fashion that this community has been culminating for decades. Whether demonstrated through streetwear, runways, or storefronts, these styles can be seen almost everywhere and are only growing in popularity.

Gender fluidity is a concept that, over the past few years, has dominated the media as well as runways. For example, there are numerous celebrities that have really catapulted this trend; some of these include Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Jaden Smith, Zendaya, and Kristen Stewart. Even shows such as Euphoria pride some of their characters on their unique and genderless styles.

With all of these current launchers, it is also important to pay homage to the earlier, yet crucial celeb adopters of this trend, including Jimi Hendrix, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, and Prince. Each of these people, however different, has challenged the idea of social and gender constructs that had once challenged their sense of individuality.

Moving on from celeb’s, androgynous fashion has been presented through numerous designers as well. A great example of this was Private Policies’ Spring 2022 collection, which was able to truly encapsulate the genderless aesthetic. Silhouettes were not limited to feminine/masculine ideals and embraced uniqueness through different cuts and styles. Dior and Versace even played around with gender neutrality by dressing their models in bright pinks and decorating them with bags and colorful, shiny suits.

We have seen time and time again the resurgence of androgyny in fashion, and this will only evolve as generations grow more accepting. With the rising popularity of social media sites such as Tiktok, we are all striving to separate ourselves from the rest of the crowd. We want individuality, and this want will only continue to intensify for years to come.
