Maya Penn, Atlanta native who is also a three-time TED speaker, an artist, a global activist, an animator, a filmmaker, a social entrepreneur, a coder, and a Simon & Schuster author, is one of the first people to wear a custom look from the new circular Coachtopia brand. Penn collaborated on this project in which the new Coach label repurposes materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

Sustainable fashion is clothing that is made from eco-friendly materials and produced in a way that minimizes its impact on the environment. It also involves fair labor practices and ethical treatment of workers. According to designer Stuart Vevers, the dress designed costume for Penn is an interpretation of a romantic silk chiffon slip dress with a grunge attitude. It incorporated vintage lace and silk leftovers from previous runway shows as well as embellishment made from discarded bike tubes, aluminum soda cans, plastic water bottles, ticket stubs, and maps salvaged from trash cans in and around the Met.

Here at NYES we did hand beading tire paillettes on chiffon fabric with scalloped edge.

We hand cut flowers from recycled lace to create a flower applique on white tulle fabric, as well as hand curated three flower boutonnieres made from laser cut water bottles.

“This gown is showcasing circularity and sustainability at the apex of fashion.”

“I hope that this sends a message to the fashion industry that sustainability is not the future, it’s the now.”

“Focus on living slower, on extending the life of what you already own.”
