Christmas Day became a federal holiday in the United States since 1870. The holiday involves decorating Christmas trees, exchanging of gifts, attending church and having meals surrounded by family and friends.

Classic films are known for having some of the most beautiful and elegant costumes in film history. We see these one of kind costumes in Christmas movies like White Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street (1947), and Meet Me in St. Louis. We see a lot of velvet fabric used and traditional Christmas colors like white, green and red. We can also see different types of embroidery included in costumes being worn by Vera Ellen (first picture on the top left), and by Donna Reed (last picture on the bottom right).
