Bulletproof Sheertex Stockings?
These indestructible stockings are almost bulletproof. Kinda.
Female inventors, undermentioned, under appreciated.
In this article, we highlight two brilliant female inventors; Stephanie Kwolek and Katherine Homuth.
Sheertex’s campaign revolves around breaking glass ceilings, not nylon tights.
Let me ask you a simple question,
When you hear the word, “textiles”, what types of fabric come to mind?
Cotton, wool, silk. Those are the three that come to mind.
Innovation is at the forefront of creation and for these women, we can’t wait to discover what the future holds not only for them, but the inspiring ideas that follow with them.
Throughout studying this industry, we see breakthroughs of one inventor evolving into another opportunity for another.
Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene
Sheertex pantyhose are made of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) that are ten times stronger than steel and used in bulletproof vests.
Don’t be fooled, these industrial innovations still feel a part of the textile family.
Smooth, flexible, and soft to touch.
Stephanie Kwolek, a brilliant chemist, had discovered a solvent that was able to dissolve long-chain polymers into a solution that was much thinner and more watery than other polymer solutions. The solution was then put into a spinneret which turns liquid polymers into fibers.
Thus, creating kevlar.
How is kevlar able to stop a bullet?
Due to it’s dense molecular structure. It's a light polyacrylamide plastic fabric, which has a high tensile strength, this means it takes a huge amount of energy to make its fibres stretch even a little. Sheertex has been able to weave the thread into an indestructible pantyhose.
From a consumer’s perspective, I’ve had dogs, cats, and general clumsiness of running into sharp objects to testify that Sheertex’s patented pantyhose withstand immense damage.
Thanks to Stephanie Kwolek’s durable material and Sheertex’s brilliant method of weaving, a nearly bulletproof stocking was created.
